San Juan Local Area
San Juan Action Agenda Oversight Group
Ecosystem recovery requires local actions to best motivate change. Nowhere is this more evident than across the conservation-minded communities of the San Juan Islands. The San Juan LIO, also known as the Action Agenda Oversight Group (AAOG) brings together numerous governmental and non-governmental, organizations, local committees, special districts, the University of Washington, and tribes that coordinate strategies, plans and actions to protect and restore the San Juan Islands’ ecosystems. Together, representatives from these organizations set priorities, design local near-term actions, and seek funds to implement actions. The local priorities are defined in the San Juan Ecosystem Protection and Recovery strategic plan.
The economic vitality and quality of life in San Juan County is based on the unique high-quality environment. Accordingly, the LIO’s focus is to protect nearshore and marine habitat and species, while improving freshwater habitat and stormwater quality. The entirety of San Juan County is designated as a Marine Stewardship Area with important nearshore habitat defined for protection. The strong conservation ethic also is reflected in the extensive areas of land designated for federal, state and local protections.
The San Juan Action Agenda Oversight Group coordinates Near Term Actions (NTAs) to achieve the priority protection and recovery goals:
To promote Soft Shores:
(Friends of the San Juans)
To protect Marine Water Quality:
(San Juan County and Marine Resources Committee)
To advance Chinook Recovery:
(Moss Landing Marine Laboratories)
To improve Summer Stream Flow and Freshwater Quality:
(San Juan County and San Juan Islands Conservation District)
